Shopping The Lines

Orient Overseas lines: Oriental Pearl and Oriental Jade.

Nice sailing schedule fo these 2 sisters that came to OOL from American Export. These dolls were 2 of the 4 Aces… and were solidly built and served AE and were a good investment for Tung for many years to come. They are both but a memory today!

American Export / Orient Overseas lines: Oceanic Independence plaque

There was a nostalgic liner outcry in the late 70’s and 80’s … where did all the liners go? This plaque for the Oceanic Independence was done as part of a series of past liners to commerate the liners that were still with us. Though she was owned by CY Tung at the time, the Oceanic Indy started life as the Independence for American Export. She cracked in half upon reaching Alang for scrapping.

Cunard Line: Hotel Queen Mary Plaque:

This could be a crafty homemade item … a near shiny shellacked plaque for the Hotel Queen Mary. Has a nice had written thanks you on the back … a gift for someone’s uncle. The Hotel QM is at least still open today … though with having so many different owners … she is in need of some unifying renovations and restoration. I’m glad to hear a lot of good restoration work has been happening lately in her Observation bar! God save the Queen!

NDL: Kaiser Wilhelm 2/ Agamemnon

NDL’s 4 funnel racer was caught at the onset of WW1 … and quickly put into service for the US Navy as the USS Agamemnon. After WW1 There were schemes to reactivate her for peacetime service alongside the Leviathan and other German ships … but she was kept in the backwaters of the reserve fleet and never used again. She remained in the backwaters until after WW2 , and was towed away as a rusty old gal to become pins and needles for American baby boomers. There is a 1″ chip out of the upper right hand corner.

Ward Line: USS Siboney WW1 portrait

The Ward Line’s Siboney actually served in both world wars … which sandwiched her peacetime service. This is a WW1 portrait of her dazzle painted and laden with lifesaving rafts. The portrait is in good shape for WW1 with a few waves, the black frame has the typical scuffs and scrapes. I may need to quote shipping for this.

Regency Cruises: Knife from the Regent Sea.

I know this came from the Regent Sea (ex Gripsholm), cause a buddy of mine tucked it in his pocket when he was onboard her in Tampa. Stainless steel … certainly not the silver service that would have been onboard during the Gripsholm days. Thanks goodness folks removed items while she was laid up in Tampa … She sank on the way to the breakers.

French Line: SS Paris Original Interior Architectural Terrace Vestibule Rendering

Another totally amazing design rendering done for the SS Paris. The rendering itself is done in pencil and ink showing a detailed elevation and section study of a wall niche for a Vestibule Terrace . These renderings would have been part of the designers concept portfolio for the proposed work onboard. I know I have seen this same rendering shown in print someplace … but alas I can’t remember. It is not in Rene Vian’s masterwork book: Arts Decroatifs A Bord des Paquebots Francais … like the other rendering I am offering for sale. The Paris herself was remodeled a few different times from her Beaux Arts and Nouveau beginnings into more of an Art Deco lady … most of the major changes happened after her first big fire in 1929. A pretty rare “one of a kind” elegant item.

French Line: SS Paris Original Interior Architectural Grand Salon Rendering

This item is totally amazing …. A wonderful interior design rendering for the SS Paris. The rendering itself is drawn in ink and gauche and shows a detailed elevations/section/plan study of a column w/ shelf design that for the Grand Salon. These renderings would have been part of the designers concept portfolio for the proposed work that was presented to the French Line. Another rendering in this exact same series was shown in Rene Vian’s masterwork book: Arts Decroatifs A Bord des Paquebots Francais (page 58). It is in beautiful condition, and would be just stunning framed. Certainly rare to find something like this that has provenance in a MAJOR and exceptionally well done publication. I can include a copy of page 58 if you like.

Swedish American Line: SS Kungsholm builders book.

WOW… if Kungsholm is your ship … This is a must have item. It is in Gorgeous shape… with just a little tiny bit of spine wear. The contents are typical of these issues … lots of adverts for supplies for the ship … and then great detailed info/ plans/ interior pictures and mechanical pictures and lots of ETC. She was the first BIG new build for SAL ( I consider Stockholm to be small)… and was followed by Gripsholm and then replaced by Kungsholm (she was then sold to NDL to become Europa). In the 80’s, she was holed at Cadiz , sank into the harbor mud and later scrapped as Costa’s Columbus C’.

Cunard Line: Queen Elizabeth “Darcy” fitting

Gene Darcy made a fortune on buying scraped ocean liner bits and making souvenir items from them: plaques, lamps bookends and such. He supposedly bought $20K worth of junk from the Queen Mary conversion in Long Beach …. That he and company made into souvenirs and these in turn made him a millionaire. With his profits he found and purchased scrapped bits from other ships … and grew his fortune considerably. The downside was he also created some reproduction items that still turn up listed as authentic! Neat valve type fitting from the QM!

United States Lines: Troopship Leviathan

Wonderful image of the Leviathan as a trooper coming into harbor (technically pre-dating her USL ownership). After the war she would become WFGibbs first BIG assignment … and her would restore her top to bottom … emerging as the USL flagship. As is common with these WW1 photos, the framing is pretty scraped and the image is a little wavy … but still is crisp and clear. You can almost read the banners on the surrounding watercraft. ** shipping calculator maybe off… I may need to quote shipping***

Lovely deckplan cut away for the marvelous twins. They were certainly the last “express” sisters ever built … as the Atlantic trade was certainly waning away. French Line/ NCL: SS Norway James flood drawing relisted and repriced

Nice early framed print of the Norway done by marine artist James Flood. Certainly done before the suites were added topside … and the ship’s good “French” looks and superb lines were a bit compromised. The Norway arrived at Alang named “Blue Lady” and was cut up for scrap metal to fuel India’s growing economy. The print is in great shape .. a few nicks to the frame. *** shipping calculator may not be correct, I should quote***

Hudson River day Line: Peter Stuyvesant Brass model

A lovely Hudson river day liner named for the last Dutch leader of the New Amsterdam settlement … which today is the BIG Apple, NYC. French Line: Normandie Sebille agency print.

GRAND agency print the for French line Normandie by Sebille. Nothing the French did for the Normandie was ever “modest” … this Agency print is no exception. The ship is powerfully racing along the high seas … cutting through huge waves like a hunting knife through warm butter. Sebille did many marine paintings for the French line … I just love his Ile de France interwar print. The nice little brass Nameplate under the ship .. it appears a French Line nameplate may have hung at the top of the frame at one point. Delta Queen Steamboat Company: American Queen Inaugural season poster 1995

American Queen was the largest river steamboat ever built when completed in 1995 … and holds that title still today. She went through several owners and was retired in 2008 … but came back into service in 2011 under contract to the newly formed American Queen Steamboat Company. Let’s all hope she remains successful and we can continue to cruise the inland rivers (primarily Ohio and Mississippi). There are some wrinkled edges and border blemishes (one small tear)… this poster came from Frank Braynard’s collection. Would looks stunning framed .. If river lore is your thing … this poster is for you! Will ship rolled in a tube.
