Groovy 50’s red bakelite ashtray marked “Linea C” … affectionately known as Costa line. Costa started as a grouping of reworked tonnage … their first new building being the Frederico C. Not sure if this ashtray would have ever been aboard the “Frederico” … but certainly the boomerang style dates from around the time of her entry into service in 1958.
Super nice twin set of prints for Cunard’s wonder ships the QE and QM. These are matching framed prints … but I’m sure they are “souvenir” posters …not ones that would have been released to an agency. At one time, you could buy prints in the onboard gift shops … and much later from folks like Gene Darcy sold leftover originals (and eventually reprints) through his “Stories of the Queens” effort. The QM print is under glass, however the QE print is not. A few nicks and bumps to the frames. Nice matching set!
The first Sun Princess was originally P&O’s Spirit of London … but was quickly transferred to the budding princess fleet when P&O bought Princess cruises in the early 1970’s. Once the popular “Loveboat” series started filming onboard the fledgling Princess fleet … bookings soared! This Irish Linen hand towel is just in absolute pristine condition … probably purchased onboard during a cruise and kept in a drawer as a precious memento. Not a common towel to find at all!
Certainly a huge German WW1 miscalculation was that fact that a huge amount merchant shipping tonnage was stuck in NY harbor at the onset of the hostilities. … especially the brand new HAPAG flagship Valterland. Once America entered the war, she was quickly seized and became our Leviathan. After the war, her reconditioning into the newly formed United States Lines flagship was WF Gibbs first assignment. This was a herculean and successful undertaking for him, and certainly pivotal career making move.. This stereocard is in excellent condition … with a little lenghtwise warp that can be easily pressed back into shape.
A great 1/2 hull model trophy for the Angelina. Hidden under her blue hull and distinctive smoke stack was the old dutch Oranje. Fire gripped hold of her as she was docked in St. Thomas and she was a complete loss … thank goodness most folks were ashore on shopping and sightseeing excursions!. Shiny brass with nameplate … Excellent condition!
These great souvenir spoons are still in their original box with tissue and “compliments from HAL card” . I am sure these were a VIP gift for some lucky passenger that probably booked a grand “spotless” cabin! I have no doubt these will shine up well with a little elbow grease.
Cute little souvenir napkin ring for the RSL Lapland. The Lapland was one of the work horses steamers that RSL schedule out of Antwerp (and eventually Liverpool) on regular voyages. Very intersting that this ring says Americian Line … certainly also part of the IMM … the Lapland must have been under charter the the AL at some point. I believe it was the Lapland that took Douglas Fairbanks and new bride Mary Pickford on part of their honeymoon journey. Nice enameled crest and I’m pretty sure the silver will polish up nicely.
Good “3 crown” wooden hanger from the Swedish American line. This needs a little glue and repair work to the “delaminating” tip on one side. I’m pretty sure this came from the Gripsholm/ Regent Sea when she was laid up in Tampa.
This is an interesting souvenir ceramic dish … from the coloring, I’d date it to the late 60’s or early 70’s. For almost 80 years the twin Kirby designed steamers took Detroit area tourists to Bob Lo island and Amusement Park. The Ste Claire is currently undergoing restoration and hopefully will return to service soon!!
A six pack of matches … totally unopened and mint condition. The Milwaukee Clipper is currently docked in Muskegon, Michigan. She is open in the summer on Saturday and Sunday afternoons for tours. Say “Yes” to Pure Michigan and come see her!
Nice set of cards for the Clipper! She was a post WW2 reconstruction project for George Sharp ( she started life as the Juniata built about the turn of the century). Nice set of cards … and they are all there with 2 jokers in the original box!
Darling little china creamer/sauceboat for a Puerto Rico line steamer . You do not see much for the Puerto Rico Line … and usually just tableware china … it’s great to see a tiny little serving piece. Great condition… no chips or cracks … there is a flaw in the glaze on the front side. Stamped Buffalo China.
Awesome Bakelite ashtray for the German twin flyers! This was probably snitched from an onboard smoking room. Great bas relief image of the ships in the bowl … sporting their lower funnels … so it must be a pretty early item. Glad somebody slipped this into their pocket or steamer trunk!
An outstanding pair of candle sticks made from teak salvaged when she was scrapped in 1935. These have been beautifully lathe turned and each has the “dismantled by” plaque attached to the base. A really nice item from her. Many folks cried when she went for scrap … FDR even penned a nice farewell to her!.
Nice unused Bridge scorecard for the SSUS. Easy to keep your game score on these … and the supply was probably limitless … as I’m sure they could be printed onboard.
Colorful folded multi-page brochure for the Britanis. This does include nice colored deckplans. This was from her 1993 Mexican Caribbean season. 5 nights, $399. She started life as a Maston liner … but after a long life with Chandris, she sailed white hulled and rusty from Tampa on her way to the scrappers.
A nice little blue matted print of the Belle! She is still chugging along today … long after the DQ went to retirement in Tennessee. I wonder who challenges her in the Great Steamboat Race at Derby Dime … Maybe the little Julia Belle Swan? The artist is Robert Conely.
A heavy bronze medal celebrating 25 years of Polish ship building 1952-1977. Great images on both sides … all it needs is a good rub a dub polish!
Little souvenir lifering for the Santa Rosa. Probably bought onboard or maybe a little prize for an onboard contest or celebration. This one needs a good cleaning. Some of the colored tape is loose.
A nice heavy plastic souvenir lifering for the Mauretania. Cunard probably sold these little guys (like all the other shipping lines) by the crate load. This one is in good shape …but needs a good cleaning.
Here is a rare one … nice souvenir pennant for the paddle steamer Avalon. She started life as the Idlewild .. and since the 60’s has been the beloved Belle of Louisville! I have been aboard a few times …and I stop and see her any time I cross the 31/ Stansifer street bridge in Louisville. Excellent condition except the typical pin holes from display use and missing one set of the tiebacks.
Felt souvenir pennant for HAL’s 1957 Statendam. She is one of my favorite 50’s ladies … and I have a few items from her from my buddy Peter Knego at www.midshipcentury.com. This pennant was used for sure … it has pin holes an the ends, the last “M” is a bit crinkled and it is missing one of the set of the tie tassels.
Another fine pin dish from Royal Cruise Line. This one is still in it’s original box and wrapper! This was a gift for Ms Neta Kabney who stayed in cabin 9065. Excellent condition!
Great little souvenr dish … with a nice image of one of their ships … the Royal Odyssey. She spent many years sailing all over the globe. The dish is in great condition with no flaws.
2 cute little boxes from a Hotel Queen Mary giftshop. One of these has the decal printed backwards … someone was not watching the assembly line that day! Some folks bemoan the QM’s current condition … but I say at least she is still with us and open for business! She is a BIG gal to constantly maintain .. I think her newest “owners” are trying!
