Hamburg Sud: Cap Polonio Mercator Model

Lovely detailed Mercator Model for the Cap Polonio. This little lady was completed right after WW1 started and was drafted into the German Navy for a brief time … but released due to poor speed performance and large coal consumption. After the war, she went to the Allies ..and in 1921 was sold back to the Germans and employed on the South American route for which she was built. She was sold for scrap in the early years of the depression

Hamburg Sud: Cap Arcona Mercator Model

Wonderful and minutely detailed Mercator Model of Germany’s leading lady to South America … the Cap Arcona. She was called the “Queen of the South Seas” and offered the finest passage from Germany to South American. Taken over by the German navy in WW2 she was used to house prisoners and refugees. Unfortunately, just a few days before Germany surrendered, she was bombed and almost 5000 souls lost their lives.

NDL: Columbus Mercator Model.

The details on these Mercator models is nothing short of extraordinary. This is a lovely model of the Columbus … really the only liner (she was on the ways) left to Germany at the end of WW2. Originally to be named Hindenberg she assumed the name Columbus .. when her sister “Columbus” was given to The Allies and become the Homeric for White Star. The Columbus (now ex Hindenberg) was modernized in the late 20’s to keep up with the speedy new NDL racers … the Bremen and Europa. The Columbus was sadly scuttled by her German crew off the US coast to a avoid capture.

HAPAG: Imperator Mercator Model

Known for their minute and impressive detail, Mercator models are amazing!… Here we have the first of Ballin’s trio … the Imperator. The Kaiser was so impressed with the ship … he saw to it that the social hall had his bust displayed prominently. The model shows the Imperator very early in life … with the bow eagle and super tall funnels. The eagle lasted on a few voyages .. and the funnels were shortened in her first refit. Excellent condition!

NDL/ USL: Kronprinz Wilhelm / Von Steuben War service book: signed

Wonderful book on the USS Von Steuben’s WW1 wartime service for the Stars and Stripes. She was built as NDL’s Kronprinz Wilhelm and at one time held the Blue Riband of the Atlantic. After the war, rumors abounded that she would be refurbished and used to show off America’s industrial might .. or even more service, but this was not the case and she was the first of the captured German four funneled liners to go to the breakers. Signed by the Author!

Italian Line: Conte Di Savoia Press Anti-Rolling Photo rendering

Cool and almost pristine Press photo / rendering showing the Conte’s anti-rolling machinery. The text is no longer with the picture .. but it perhaps was touting the new stabilizing equipment. In the end, it was not very successful, and alas the conte did not survive WW2. The photo is in almost perfect shape and printed on rather heavy stock.

French Line: Normandie Charity Program June 1935

rare and cool charity program form the Normandie for June 25th 1935. This would have been on one of her first voyages. The entertainment took place in the Grand Salon (WOW) and a collection was taken up to benefit the French and American seamen’s funds. Comedian Vic Oliver was the master of ceremonies for the evening … events include singers, dancers, magic and other acts. The program which includes a cover and an insert is in great shape with maybe a slight little wrinkle to it .. though I will store it flat and I am sure it can be pressed. Rare indeed!

Canadian Pacific: Tale of Two Sisters Book by Ian Kinder

Here is the much awaited book on the sisters Empress of Ireland and Empress of Britain from my Canadian friend Ian …
I need to get my own copy ordered ASAP… Here are the preview tidbits from the back of the book:

The Tale of Two Sisters is packed with:
Unseen pictures from the original reports of Lloyd’s Register who surveyed the
construction of the Empress of Britain and the Empress of Ireland from the keel up.
Photographic illustration of what it must have looked like when the SS Storstad and
the Empress of Ireland collided.

Very rare pictures taken aboard the SS Storstad and the SS Helvetia. Ship’s plans and diagrams showing the collisions that occurred involving all four ships and so many mysteries revealed.

… Two coal carrying colliers; the SS Storstad and the SS Helvetia were built and
launched from the same ship yard only a year apart. The latter made less of a mark on
Maritime history, but both were destined to meet two sister ships called the Empress
of Ireland and the Empress of Britain…

… In the early hours of May 29th 1914, Captain Kendall loses sight of an unknown vessel steaming down the St. Lawrence river into a fog bank. Captain Henry George Kendall (while knowing that the other vessel was in the vicinity) orders the Empress of Ireland to a dead stop, but did the ship stop?…

… With only seconds left Captain Murray orders the Empress of Britain full speed astern
after hearing an approaching vessel foghorn extremely close. Out of the fog emerges a
collier passing across the Empress” bow; Captain Murray knew it was too late…

If you wish you can order this book directly from Ian at either his website @ www.theempressofireland.com. Shipping to the US and Canada is $10 and Ian will quote postage for other world wide locations.

D&C Lines: 1929 Season Brochure

Very interesting 25 page-ish booklet that covers D&C lines services for the entire 1929 season. Lots of folks would have been traveling on these great ships for work and or leisure … thought the great stock market Crash later that year probably ended most of the leisure sailings … folks had no money. This booklets contains all info you would need .. lots of nice ship info , plans pictures etc and lots of port info as well. There are quite a few adverts too .. even for “rival” Steamship lines on the Great Lakes like the Georgian Bay line, GLTC and others. The cover of this is a little brittle and is starting to separate form the spine .. but interior contents are what will keep you entertained! Wonderful D&C graphics!

Cunard Line: QM2 Introduction Brochure

The large extravagant intro Brochure for the QM2 , how can this be described other than lovely? Cunard sure markets and capitalizes on the traditional and nostalgic aspects of the vessel and ocean liner travel .. and of course the ships relations to her historic retired fleet mates. The brochure if chock full of renderings of the ships interiors … most are almost too real looking not to be true photos! The insert in the back covers all of her voyages for the first season. Truly a modern masterpiece! A little bump to the cover corners.
